If you’re tired of finding cookware coated in food and water spots after a cycle, it’s time to adjust your dishwasher habits. Dishwasher repairs may not be needed right away. In fact, in many cases, how you’re using the appliance is the problem. Below are several mistakes to avoid so you get the best service from the machine.

What Not to Do When Using a Dishwasher

1. Overloading

It may be tempting to cram a few extra dishes into the washing trays, but it’s ultimately going to result in poor cleaning. A dishwasher’s capacity is determined by how far its sprayer arms reach. The sprayer won’t contact all the surfaces if the dishes are too close together or if forks and spoons are bunched into a tight clump.

Place only enough dishes to fill the slots on the rolling trays. Position them so they face the center of the appliance and receive the most exposure to the sprayer arm.

2. Not Cleaning the Appliance

dishwasher repairsA lot of food particles, bacteria, and soap scum settle in your appliance. These particles get left on clean dishes, producing unpleasant smells. Check the drain at the bottom of your machine and remove stuck food.

Place only a cup of white vinegar in the tray and run the dishwasher to remove grime and odors. You can also spot-clean the inside with a mineral remover or detergent. Remove remaining food particles from the trays after each use, and deep clean once or twice each month.

3. Not Clearing Food From Dishes

Dishwashers aren’t garbage disposals. Food left on plates can clog the drain at the base of the appliance. This could result in leaks and built-up pressure that damages the sealing strip around the door.

Clear plates in the trash and run them under the sink faucet before placing them in the dishwasher rack. Rinsing loosens condiments and food particles so your dishwasher will have an easier time cleaning them.
