If your gums tend to bleed when you brush or floss, it’s natural to be alarmed. With prompt intervention, though, it may be possible to address the underlying issue and prevent damage. As such, it’s wise to visit your dentist as soon as possible, even if you’re not due for a teeth cleaning. Here are some of the most common causes of sensitive gums that your provider will check for during the appointment.

Why Are Your Gums Bleeding?

1. Gum Disease

Characterized by tender, swollen gums, gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease. Thankfully, dentists can treat this condition before it causes any permanent oral health issues.

If you have gingivitis, your dentist will essentially perform a deep cleaning that includes scaling and root planing to eliminate the plaque and tartar lining your teeth. This will also rid your mouth of the bacteria that caused the infection in the first place.

2. Medication Side Effects

dentistSome of the most popular drugs, including those that prevent seizures and combat hypertension, can cause inflammation of the gums. If you’re diligent about brushing and flossing but you’re still experiencing bleeding gums, your medication regimen may be to blame. Bring a list of the drugs and supplements you currently take to your exam so that the dentist can identify any potential culprits.

3. Nutrient Deficiencies

If your diet lacks vitamin C or K, your gums may swell or bleed. Some of the best sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, kale, broccoli, and strawberries.

Leafy greens, on the other hand, are a good source of vitamin K. You can also get these nutrients by taking multivitamins. Make sure to talk to your primary care physician before taking any supplements.
