In autumn, you might be taking time to clean out the gutters, rake the lawn, and prep your furnace for the colder months ahead. However, it’s also important to think about your vehicle as the seasons begin to change. Proper tire maintenance will allow you to drive with confidence, no matter the weather. Use the following auto maintenance tips to prepare your vehicle for fall and winter drives.

How to Prepare Car Tires for the Fall Season

1. Inspect the All-Season Tires

While Alaska drivers get a considerable amount of use out of winter tires, it’s still advised to switch to all-season tires for the warmest months of the year. Before you take off your summer set, however, inspect the tire tread so you know whether you’ll need to order replacements for the following year.

For a quick test, stick a penny into the tread, with Lincoln’s head facing upside down. If the entire head is visible between the grooves of the tread, you need to replace the tires.

2. Switch to Snow Tires

auto maintenanceIn Alaska, winter tires are best installed in the fall. This set will feature softer, more malleable rubber, which results in better traction on the slippery roads. Your tires may also be studded for additional grip on icy inclines.

Switch to winter tire models as soon as it’s cold enough for ice to form on the ground. Don’t swap them out too soon, though, since summer temperatures can wear out these softer tires. If you need to purchase a new set of snow tires, place your order in early fall.

3. Monitor the Pressure

Once your winter tires are installed, consistently monitor their air pressure. The colder, less humid air causes pressure to drop. As the air shrinks, the tires will seem to deflate. This could lead to decreased traction on slippery pavement. Use a gauge to check your tire psi at least once a week so you can compensate for drastic temperature drops as the weather changes.
