Monitor the chemicals.

Pool maintenance chemicals keep the structure free of algae and bacteria, and they have to stay at safe levels. Test the water two to three times a week to ensure the chlorine level is at one to three parts per million—this will optimize sanitation without causing skin and eye irritation.

The water’s pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.6. Lower levels will eat away at the pool’s materials, like plaster, and higher levels can inhibit the chlorine’s ability to sanitize the water.

Keep it clean.

Pool cleaning is essential to keeping it swimmable. Clean it every day or two with a skimming net to remove floating debris, leaves, and twigs, as they’ll interfere with the water’s circulation and filtration. Vacuum the structure’s bottom and clean the strainer basket at least once a week to keep the water clean without having to use more chlorine.

Run the pump constantly.

Running the pump 24/7 will strain it and wear the motor from excessive use. Instead, use the pump for two hours twice a day to keep the water circulating and the equipment in good shape. You should also have the component inspected by a professional at least once a year to make sure it’s safe and have any worn parts replaced.

Ignore the filter.

This component removes small debris and dirt particles from the water, and it should be changed roughly every six months. Replace the filter if it’s clogged with algae, or if the pressure gauge reading suddenly rises by six to eight PSI higher than usual.
