If you love sewing, your craft area is probably cluttered with a selection of needles, spools of thread, and an assortment of other notions. A disorganized workspace can make any project more frustrating, forcing you to drop what you’re doing to hunt for a ruler or piece of chalk. If your sewing supplies could use some organization, follow the easy tips below.

4 Tips for Organizing Your Sewing Supplies

1. Hang Tools on a Pegboard

Space is always a premium, so take advantage of the walls in your work area. A simple pegboard on the wall can be used to hang shears, rotary cutters, grid rulers, and other tools that can take up a lot of drawer space.

2. Use Containers in Drawers

sewingCraft drawers can quickly become a confusing mess of thread, pincushions, and other items all mixed together. Small plastic or felt containers can bring some order to the chaos, giving you a place to keep similar supplies together. Pins and needles can live in one compartment, while chalk and markers sit in another. This makes it easy to find what you need without losing the flow of your project.

3. Store Fabric in Bins

Fabric is easiest to store folded up, but stacks of material can quickly overwhelm a closet or craft room. Stackable plastic bins are a great solution for keeping your material organized. Many have clear sides that also make it easy for you to find the fabric you need without digging through every bin.

4. Get a Wooden Carryall

Most sewers use the same tools over and over, so it’s best to keep them close at hand. A wooden carryall on the table gives you a place to put your favorite thread, scissors, and templates, while still keeping them out of the way. Just be sure to put the tallest items in the back so you can always find what you’re looking for.
