Cavities can happen to anyone, no matter how diligent they try to be. Fortunately, a cavity filling can stop tooth decay before it results in serious discomfort, abscesses, or other permanent health issues. If your dentist has discovered a cavity, below are a few facts you might like to know about the treatment process.

What Is a Filling?

Once bacteria gain a foothold in your tooth, stopping tooth decay can be extremely difficult with oral hygiene alone. Cavity fillings are common procedures that allow dentists to remove the decay and fill the space with another material. This stops the damage and also seals the tooth and prevents further infection in the future.

For over a century, dentists have used amalgam, a mixture of mercury, tin, and silver, to fill cavities. While inexpensive and easy to work with, amalgam has a dark color that doesn’t blend in with natural teeth. Most dentists offer composite resin or ceramic fillings that are nearly invisible, but just as durable as old-fashioned materials.

What to Expect During a Filling

Next, the dentist will fill the space with amalgam, resin, or another dental material. Once it’s hardened, they’ll file down the excess material until the surface is perfectly smooth and lined up with your natural tooth.

After the Filling

Your mouth might be numb for a few hours after the procedure, which can make it difficult to eat or drink. In general, it’s best to avoid chewing with the affected tooth or drinking hot liquids until the anesthetic wears off. Otherwise, you might bite your tongue or burn yourself without knowing.

Your tooth may also be sensitive to hot and cold after getting a filling. In most cases, this sensitivity fades within a few days, although it could take several weeks to get back to normal. If you experience pain or discomfort after getting a filling, schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist.
