During driving classes, people learn different turns so they know how to safely maneuver their vehicles in various scenarios. The three-point turn is one maneuver often used for emergencies. Use the following guide to learn which specific situations warrant executing this turn and how to master the skill.

What Drivers Need to Know About Executing Three-Point Turns

When Should You Use One?

The objective of a three-point turn is to move the vehicle 180 degrees so it faces the opposite direction. People use this maneuver to turn around when a road or street isn’t wide enough to complete a U-turn in one seamless movement. It’s also used when there isn’t a nearby parking lot or driveway to turn around in.

A three-point turn involves moving forward and backing up a few times, and it should only be attempted on a road with very few cars. This will minimize the risk of accidents and help you avoid slowing down traffic.

How Do You Complete a Three-Point Turn?

Cincinnati-Ohio-driving-classesTo start a three-point turn on a two-lane road, pull the car close to the right shoulder. Turn on the right turn signal to alert other drivers that they can pass you. Look over your right shoulder to check behind you and use the mirrors to look for oncoming traffic from both directions.

When the road is clear, turn on the left signal and proceed to drive forward into the left lane until the front bumper touches the curb. Stop and put the car in reverse before turning the wheel to the right. Back up until the car is at a diagonal angle between the two lanes and then stop. Shift the car into drive and proceed forward in the new lane.
