While Lady Justice herself is blind, how you conduct yourself in court can open her eyes, by your own doing. This could potentially have an impact on your case’s outcome. Upon your secured release, knowing what to do at your first court appearance will help make a positive first impression with the judge and staff of the court. Here are a few tips you should know before your first court date.

How to Prepare for Your First Court Appearance

1. Plan to Arrive Early

Keeping the court waiting will almost definitely leave the court with an unfavorable impression. In cases of repeated lateness and apathy toward the court’s schedule, bail can be revoked by the court. Driving to the courthouse before your first appearance will give you an idea of the travel time. Whatever time you’re given, try to show up about 15 minutes early.

2. Dress Appropriately

3. Speak Calmly

Whenever you are called upon, address the court calmly and politely. Equally important is knowing when to talk. A good rule of thumb is only to speak when asked and give short direct answers at your attorney’s direction. You will almost always be asked direct “yes” or “no” questions and you should answer in the same fashion, followed with “your honor”. For instance:

Judge“Do you understand the charges brought against you today?”

You“Yes, you honor. or No, your honor”

Never interrupt anyone else’s testimony, even if you believe they are incorrect. Let your attorney speak for you in every instance unless your attorney directs you to answer.

4. Treat Everyone With Respect

Whenever you are in a courthouse, treat everyone with courtesy and respect. Although you may not agree with why you are there, understand that the court staff are simply doing their own jobs to the best of their ability. While this is a good rule to follow anywhere, it’s especially important when your future might be on the line.
