Purchasing a new air conditioner can be challenging when there are so many different types to choose from. Many homeowners select duct-free HVAC systems for their efficiency and easy installation. If you aren’t sure if this system is right for your home and lifestyle, here’s what you should know.

A Guide to Ductless AC Systems

What are duct-free HVAC systems?

A duct-free HVAC system is an air conditioner or heater that does not require ductwork to function. The three components needed to heat or cool a room are the outdoor compressor unit, an indoor unit, and tubing that connects the units.

How are they installed?

The installation of ductless AC systems is done in two parts. First, the indoor unit is affixed to a place on an outside wall with no obstructions so that the air can flow freely.

Duct-Free HVACThe indoor unit should be placed relatively high, at least six feet from the floor, to help the device cool the room evenly. After installing the indoor unit, a two to three-inch hole is cut in the outside wall to make room for the connecting tube.

The outdoor unit should be placed outside of your home next to the same wall where your indoor unit is installed. It’s often attached to a mounting pad with nuts and bolts to keep it secure. When the unit is stable, the connecting tube is attached to the back of the unit and fed through the previously-cut hole to the indoor unit.

What are the benefits?

Although most homes have air conditioning systems with ductwork, duct-free HVAC systems are sometimes a more practical option for families. Since these systems allow you to choose which parts of your home to heat or cool, they’re more efficient than systems that force air into every room.

Additionally, ductless systems allow for each family member to set temperatures to their liking. This ensures that everyone has complete control over their comfort.

How long do ductless systems last?

While most forced-air systems last up to 15 years, ductless systems can last for over 20 years with the proper maintenance. Cleaning and replacing air filters as needed, inspecting refrigerant lines, and removing debris from the outside unit can extend the life span of your system.
