Attending a community college is an affordable way to further your education, whether after high school or as a working adult. Doing well in these classes can determine your eligibility for scholarships, as well as your future career opportunities. Taking notes during class lectures will go a long way in helping you retain information and prepare for tests. Here are some tips for doing so effectively.

How to Take Better Notes at Southeast Community College

1. Stay Organized

Whether you are handwriting notes or typing them on a laptop, devise an easy-to-follow system for organizing them. For digital notes, it can help to create separate folders for each class. Give each document a searchable title.

When handwriting notes, use a new page for each lecture. Listing the date and primary topic at the top of each page can also make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

2. Know What to Take Notes On

community collegeMany students spend time taking notes of their teacher's PowerPoint® presentation, even though the instructor will make the slides available online after the lecture. Instead, take notes on their key talking points. Even if the teacher doesn’t say something will be on a test, their emphasis on that topic should let you know that it is important.

3. Review Your Notes That Same Day

Don’t wait to review your notes until the week of your quiz or exam. Instead, look over them a few hours after taking them while the memory of the lecture is still relatively fresh in your mind. This way you can expand or adjust your notes as needed based on what you remember from your class. Alternatively, you can ask your instructor about any lingering questions you have.
