When an HVAC system breaks down, you can get it fixed or replace it with a new device. A contractor assesses different aspects of the equipment to offer the best solution. Here are a few ways they determine which choice is more cost-effective in the long run.

Should You Repair or Replace Your HVAC System?

1. Age

An older system is more likely to break down. It might also keep malfunctioning and require frequent service even after repairs. Over time, the cost of maintenance could add up to the price of a new unit.

In general, air conditioners and heat pumps last about 10 to 12 years, while furnaces last between 15 and 20 years. When your equipment reaches these ages, replacement is typically the more cost-effective option.

2. Efficiency

HVACRising utility bills often indicate that an HVAC system is consuming more power than it should. Other signs of reduced energy efficiency include temperature fluctuations throughout the home and clammy, humid air. Maintenance can sometimes restore an inefficient system’s performance. For example, replace your air filter to improve airflow throughout the house.

If taking this step doesn’t help, a contractor may recommend upgrading to a unit with a higher Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating. This ratio measures efficiency, with higher values saving more energy.

3. Type of Problem

Some performance issues only require simple repairs. For instance, if your HVAC system makes unusual noises, a technician might seal leaky air ducts, remove twigs from the outdoor unit, or replace loose parts, such as pipes and blades. Similarly, professionals usually repair systems that produce damp, humid air by replacing damaged evaporator coils.

Other issues, however, suggest the need for replacement. For example, if the AC’s vents blow warm air and your energy bills are rising, the system may be leaking refrigerant. Refrigerant is a noncombustible gas that cools a home by absorbing heat from the air. Repairing a leak and refilling refrigerant could cost the same or even more than replacing the equipment. Likewise, if an HVAC technician finds a broken heat exchanger or compressor, you’re better off replacing the system since repairing these components is often just as costly.
