As a boss or manager of a workspace, you want to create an atmosphere that promotes employee health, happiness, and productivity. A giant part of the environment is the office design you implement, including the furniture and space decor. Below are a few tips you can follow to boost the productivity and efficiency of your employees.

How to Design an Enjoyable Office Space for Your Employees

1. Boost Natural Light

If your office space has windows, embrace them. Avoid using blinds or dark tints that block light from entering the workspace instead control where the light comes from or reflects to.  For example, sky lights are nice and used throughout Europe to save energy.  Southern windows get hot in the summer but the light can be bounced up, down or to one side using artistic pieces that act as mirrors or shutters.  Natural sunlight adds an invigorating brightness to the area, and it can boost the positivity of employees’ attitude.

Vitamin D promotes better health, helping employees fight depression, diabetes, and chronic pain. It also can help regulate serotonin and melatonin production, improving mood and sleep regulation, which promotes productivity and alertness.  Decreased natural light in the winter and northern exposure rooms can cause emotional downturns.

2. Use Bright Color Schemes

Don’t overdo the neutral tones when selecting your office colors. Too much of these colors can come off as drab. They can also contribute to feelings of depression, which can stifle productivity, creativity, and alertness. Shades of blue, green, and soft yellow will energize workers, boosting creativity and productivity, as well as improving their comfortability. Strategically paint walls where natural light does not reach.

3. Employ an Open Space for Teams

Open floor plans without dividers or walls allow team members to collaborate, leading to more cooperation, brainstorming, and faster problem-solving. Use large tables that accommodate multiple people, or group desks together so teams are situated close to one another.

4. Choose Ergonomic Furniture

Depending on the office, employees likely spend most of their workdays sitting down at a computer desk. Ergonomic office furniture is designed to minimize the strain this puts on workers’ backs, necks, and wrists, maximizing their comfort.

From desks and chairs to keyboards, ergonomic options will improve posture and reduce pain levels, keeping sick days at a minimum. Less pain will increase workplace productivity, as well. Employees will have fewer distractions, such as sore backs and tight muscles, that keep them from working at the highest level.
