When it’s time to upgrade the wiring in your home, there are actually a wide variety of outlets you can choose from. Different outlets have unique purposes and can handle various levels of electricity. Your local electrician will be able to identify the best choice for each room in your home. Below, learn about the types of power outlets.

5 Unique Types of Power Outlets

1. 15-Amp Duplex Receptacle

This is a standard outlet in American homes. It has one long and neutral slot and one short and hot slot with a dome-shaped rounding hole. This type of outlet can handle most basic electrical needs but doesn’t protect against short circuits or arcs.

2. GFCI Outlets

electricianGFCI stands for “ground fault circuit interrupter.” These types of outlets look like duplex receptacles but come with extra hardware inside the wall that protects against short circuits or ground faults. The normal flow of electricity comes in through the hot slot and returns through the neutral one, but if electricity flows beyond that, the GFCI outlet trips and stops the flow. An electrician will typically install these in bathrooms and kitchens.

3. AFCI Outlets

This stands for “arc fault circuit interrupter” and is designed to stop electrical arcs that can cause fires. Most modern homes should have these outlets. If your home was built before 1999, consider installing these outlets at the beginning of each circuit to protect the outlets following them.

4. 20A Outlets

These outlets are designed for laundry rooms and garages because they can support 25% more electrical load without tripping. Power-hungry appliances like dryers work well with these. 20A outlets have a small notch on the left prong to differentiate them from other outlets.

5. USB Outlets

These are also normal outlets that have additional USB ports on them. You can also find outlets that are all four USB ports instead of the two standard plugs paired with two USB ports. Having an electrician install these in your home means you can charge your mobile devices directly from wall electricity.
