While most people in the country are getting their homes ready for the upcoming winter chills, Hawaii residents need to ensure their air conditioning systems are still operating efficiently after the summer stress. That’s why fall is an ideal time to perform these basic HVAC services.

Fall HVAC Service Checklist

1. Replace the Air Filters

Through regular usage, the air filters in your AC system become embedded with dust, dirt, and allergens. Not only does this reduce the efficiency of your system, but it also affects indoor air quality.

When pollutants circulate throughout the home, people experience issues with nasal congestion, irritated eyes, and respiratory problems. Replace the air filters every 30 to 90 days to reduce these symptoms and boost the system’s efficiency.

2. Clean the Outdoor Unit

An outdoor unit embedded with dirt or surrounded by debris can’t get adequate airflow to function. That makes it work harder and shortens the life span of the system.

Clear out debris in a two-foot radius surrounding the unit, and blow compressed air from the inside out to remove dirt and dust trapped in the fins.

3. Inspect the Insulation

HVAC ServicesWhen the insulation around your exterior doors and windows becomes damaged, it allows the air inside the home to escape. That forces the system to run more to maintain interior temperatures, which leads to more expensive utility bills.

If you feel a draft coming from any window or door, apply temporary weather stripping to lock in the air. If the weather stripping doesn’t work, consider upgrading to newer, more energy-efficient insulation.

4. Consider a New Thermostat

If your thermostat is more than 10 years old, upgrade to a programmable model to improve the efficiency of your system. These newer devices are compatible with most older HVAC systems and allow for much more control.

You can set it to run on a schedule customized to your lifestyle and avoid running the system unnecessarily. That will help save money on monthly utility bills and protect the system from excessive wear and tear.
