If your dentist has diagnosed you with gum disease, they may recommend scaling and root planing to protect your oral health. Learn what to expect from this non-surgical procedure with the following frequently asked questions.

An Intro to Scaling & Root Planing

Why is it necessary?

When plaque has significantly built up inside your mouth, the gums become inflamed and pull away from the teeth. Small pockets form between the gums and teeth that harbor bacteria. Because the bacteria are so deep beneath the gumline, they can’t be removed with brushing or flossing, so deep cleaning is needed. Without it, the gums will continue to recede, and you may eventually lose teeth.

What is the process like?

dentistScaling and root planing may be split into two appointments targeting different parts of your mouth. Your dentist will apply a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. During scaling, they’ll use an ultrasonic or metal instrument to loosen and remove hardened tartar, plaque, and bacteria. During root planing, they’ll smooth the tooth roots’ rough surfaces and remove any remaining bacteria, so the gums can seal up around the teeth.

What should I expect afterward?

Your gums may feel sensitive and swollen and bleed for up to a week after the procedure. Your dentist may give you medication or a mouth rinse to prevent re-infection and promote quick healing. Avoid unusually hot or cold foods since your teeth may be sensitive to temperature.

You’ll return for another appointment in a few weeks, so your provider can measure the gum pockets. If the treatment worked, the pockets should be smaller. If they’re deeper, you may need more treatment.

How do I avoid gum disease in the future?

After the treatment has worked, proper oral care will prevent your gums from becoming infected again. Brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and replace the brush when the bristles show wear, usually every three months. Floss and rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash once a day, and don’t smoke.
