Whether it’s for work, school, or just a change of pace, moving is exciting. It marks the beginning of a new chapter. But before you can turn the page, your possessions must be packed, stored, and transferred. While a moving company will take on the most substantial items, there are safety tips to abide by to make the move safer for everyone.

Do:

Select the right outfit.

Clothes need to be comfortable on the day of the move. For many, that means dressing in baggy, long, or over-sized clothes. However, they can get caught or cause tripping. While humidity decreases in Hawaii as the day goes on, its heat increases. Wear flexible but breathable clothes to maintain mobility and comfort.

Avoid heels, sandals, and flip flops. They’re flimsy, can impair balance, and reduce mobility. Stick to sneakers or boots, instead.

Loosen up.

moving companyMuscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints need to be prepared before lifting. Incorporate exercises to provide your body with the wake-up call it needs.

Time permitting, try to do some yoga before the moving company arrives. Yoga strengthens the core while relaxing the mind, readying the brain and the body for the day ahead.

Don’t:

Overpack.

Boxes hold a surprising amount of weight, but they shouldn’t be filled to the brim just because they offer enough room. People tend to stock many books into their boxes because they’re small compared to other items. However, they quickly add heft.

Use a home scale to weigh each packed box. A small box shouldn’t have more than 50 pounds in it, a medium’s limit is 65 pounds, while large boxes should be stopped at 70 pounds.

Many people invest in extra-large boxes rather than the smaller varieties since larger boxes would mean fewer ones to carry. While capable of holding heavy items, pack other bulky objects, including comforters, linens, and clothes.

Lift more than necessary.

Don’t lift particularly heavy items. That’s what the moving company is for. If there are items you want to move personally, ask for help, and don’t push yourself beyond your body’s limits.

Maintain proper moving form. When picking up an item, bend the knees. Squat down to take hold of the object, and engage the legs to lift. Don’t lean forward, but do remember to keep the spine in a neutral position. When setting an item down, bend the knees and clench your core muscles.
