As the parent of a preschool or early elementary-aged child, you may already know about "after school restraint collapse," even if you haven't put a name to it. It is a tendency for young children to return from school and immediately have a meltdown after having held it together all day. It can be frustrating and perplexing for parents. The following is what you need to know to deal with it.

Why Does Restraint Collapse Occur?

Young children do not yet have the coping skills required to deal with daily life stresses and challenges. Kindergarten and preschool kids are just beginning to spend time away from home, interact with others, and manage upsets and frustrations. The familiarity of their home and the comfort of a parent provide a safety net the child needs to release pent up anger, irritation, or simply tension. It often manifests as a tantrum shortly after the child walks through the door.

How Can You Prevent Restraint Collapse?

Help your child stay connected to home while they are at kindergarten or preschool. Let them take a favorite toy from home or write them a note or draw them a picture they can keep with them while you aren't present. These "bridge" items help ground them in loving and familiar circumstances throughout the day, so a return home isn't such a trigger. Offer an after-school snack to prevent "hangry" outbursts.

How Should You Handle Tantrums?

Preschool in St. Charles and Cottleville, MOIf prevention doesn't work, don't lose your temper. Understand your child is just unable to cope with strong feelings. Some kids like it when you offer hugs and pay attention to what they have to say. Others just need space to gather themselves and prefer you not to hover. Your child will let you know what they want from you. When the time is right, listen patiently and validate your child's feelings. Offer comfort and empathy, and remember that the tantrum means your child trusts you.
