How to Drain an Air Compressor, Maryland Heights, Missouri

Whether you rely on an air compressor for filling tires or spraying paint, the tank has a clever way of protecting itself from humidity. Air compressors feature small drains, which allow the vapor in the air to condense into water and escape. To perform this maintenance task, follow these three simple steps.

3 Ways to Drain Your Air Compressor

1. Prevent Safety Risks

First, you’ll need to protect yourself from the risk of shock or electrocution. If you have an electric air compressor, start by turning the power switch to the “off” position. Then, unplug the compressor from the wall outlet or extension cord. Before you start the next step, put on a pair of thick safety goggles to protect your eyes.

2. Decrease the Pressure

air compressorTo drain the compressor, you’ll first need to lower the air pressure inside the tank. With your goggles securely on, place one hand in front of the tank’s safety valve, and use your dominant hand to pull the ring.

As you pull the ring, the valve will release a steady stream of air, and your hand will act as a shield (in case the air contains fine particles of debris). Wait until the tank is empty, or the pressure valve reads under 10 PSI.

3. Empty the Drain

If it’s not easily visible on the underside of the tank, use your compressor’s manual to find out where the drain valve is located. Then, open up the valve, allowing the water to drip out. Slowly tilt the tank to the left and right so all the moisture can escape. Finally, close the valve and make sure your air compressor is on stable ground before resuming use.
