It’s natural for a car’s wheels to become misaligned over time. Common causes include forceful impacts, like striking curbs or potholes, and worn mechanical components, especially in the suspension system. If your vehicle is exhibiting any of the following signs, it may be time for a wheel alignment.

3 Signs You Need a Wheel Alignment

1. Squealing Tires

Wheels that are no longer aligned will eventually start dragging across the pavement when you make certain maneuvers. In doing so, they’ll emit a high-pitched squealing sound that’s impossible to ignore. The worse the misalignment, the more they’ll drag, until they start leaving skid marks everywhere. Naturally, this will wear down your tires over time, so get them realigned at the first sign of trouble.

2. Crooked Steering Wheel

wheel alignmentUnless you’re physically turning the wheel, it should remain relatively straight and upright. If it defaults to a crooked position when you don’t apply any pressure, the wheels are not aligned with the steering system. This will make it harder to operate the vehicle safely in traffic, so address the problem as soon as possible.

3. Veering While Driving

A properly aligned vehicle will continue traveling in a straight path even after you take your hands off the steering wheel. A car that’s misaligned, on the other hand, will veer sharply to the left or right when you stop inputting steering force.

Additionally, the steering wheel should return to a neutral, upright position automatically after you finish turning. If it doesn’t, that’s another sign the vehicle needs realigning.
