People love sharing things with their pets. Whether you're sharing a cozy nap, delightful walk, or a holiday meal, many pet owners enjoy treating their pets as cherished members of the family. Animal Medical Center considers pets family too, but they still want everyone to recognize that our beloved pals are still a different species. Because of that difference, we simply can't share everything. To help you make better choices this holiday season, Foley, AL's leading animal clinic has put together this guide of holiday plants and foods that are harmful to pets:

  • Alcohol: Your pet doesn't have the tolerance for this harmful product and can suffer severe symptoms from it. Keep the booze on the table and well sealed this holiday season to prevent accidental ingestion.
  • Caffeine: Dark and baking chocolate contain the most dangerous caffeine levels, while milk and white chocolate have less. A large dog that sneaked a bite of milk chocolate might be fine, while a smaller dog might become seriously ill. When calling for Animal Medical Center's after-hours (including holidays) emergency services, your veterinarian will ask about your dog's weight as well as the type and amount of chocolate consumed.
  • Poinsettias, Mistletoe, Holly, Lilies, & Daffodils: Many gorgeous holiday blooms and decorative foliage are quite harmful to pets if ingested. Don't worry too much if your pet isn't a plant-nibbler, but keep these plants out of reach just in case. Better yet, why not decorate with artificial flowers?
  • Yeast Dough: The smell of freshly baked dinner rolls and cinnamon buns might be pleasant for humans, but beware of feeding it to your pet. Yeast dough can cause a painful and life-threatening amount of gas to build up in your pet's stomach.
