Dentures restore your smile and chewing abilities, but it’s normal to need some time to get used to a new set. With some patience, you’ll soon be able to enjoy your new smile to the fullest. Use the guide below to stay comfortable during this period.

How to Adjust to Your First Pair of Dentures

1. Track Any Symptoms

Most patients experience some discomfort during the first month. Your gums may be softer in areas where teeth were extracted, and these spots can become sore or irritated by the oral appliance.

Take note of where you experience any soreness and report this to your dentist. If needed, the professional might adjust the appliance to improve the fit.

2. Start With Soft Foods

denturesEating with your new dentures requires practice. For the first two weeks, choose meals with soft foods, including mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, bananas, yogurt, and oatmeal. These options are nutritious and allow you to practice chewing.

Once you’re comfortable, feel free to return to your regular diet. However, avoid hard candy and sticky, chewy snacks. These leave harmful residue on the surface of the appliance and can pull the teeth out of position.

3. Strengthen the Cheek Muscles

Chewing and speaking with dentures require using the muscles of the cheeks, called buccinators. Exercising these muscles strengthens them, helping you secure the dentures in your mouth.

Common exercises include smiling widely and repeating vowel sounds. Performing these actions for a few minutes each day activates your facial muscles. Over time, you may find it easier to chew and speak clearly while wearing artificial teeth.

4. Consider Adhesives

Adhesives and denture creams help cushion the gums and secure bridgework. Adhesives might also resolve minor discomfort in the first few weeks and keep the appliance in place as you grow accustomed to chewing solid foods.

Keep in mind that adhesives and creams can’t solve pain. If you experience discomfort after the first month, you may need a denture adjustment or replacement.
