When it’s time for a commercial roof replacement, contractors often recommend EPDM to clients. Since the roofs of most businesses are flat and not meant to enhance curb appeal, many building owners aren’t familiar with this type of material. Here’s a closer look at the advantages that come with choosing this option.

What Is EPDM Roofing?

Ethylene propylene diene monomer is commonly shortened to EPDM and referred to as rubber roofing. Instead of installing asphalt shingles, tile, or metal to your building, synthetic rubber is used as a covering that’s adhered using liquid adhesives or formulated tape. This option, created from a combination of recycled tires, sawdust, and slate dust, is generally available in black and white and is most commonly used on flat roofs, patios, and carports.

What Are the Benefits?

roof replacementThe primary advantage of choosing EPDM for your roof replacement is the cost. The material is incredibly affordable, and a professional contractor can install your new roof in a very timely manner. In addition to saving time and money, EPDM roofing has very few seams, thus minimizing the risk of leaks.

As such, the life span of your roof can exceed two decades. Better still, this lightweight material doesn’t require added reinforcements. As a durable and relatively scratch-resistant material, roof repairs are quite easy to perform.

When efficiency and life span are a top priority, you can also elect to apply a roofing membrane over the top to further reduce the likelihood of leaks and damage. It’s important to note that while black EPDM roofing does absorb heat, it isn’t negatively impacted by harsh UV rays. Thus, it can be installed in sunny, hot-weather climates as well.
