Collision repair services restore a vehicle's beauty and functionality following an accident. While this will allow you to drive like usual, there are some precautions you can take to preserve the work done at the auto body shop. The guide below looks at some of these best practices.

Do:

Perform a thorough inspection.

When you first pick up the vehicle from the collision repair shop, look at the original site of the damage. For example, if there was a dent on the door, open and close it to check its functionality. Check that the gap between the closed door and the auto body is even. Also, examine the paint for color match, texture, and overspray issues. You can also take the vehicle for a short test drive to ensure all mechanical repairs are complete.

Wash the vehicle by hand.

As part of the repair process, your vehicle will have a fresh layer of paint applied. If you take it to the car wash too early, the water pressure can leave deep scratches on the new coat. Instead, wash it by hand using a sponge and mild soap for at least three months while everything cures and sets.

Park in covered areas.

When your car is left exposed, harsh weather and debris can damage the exterior and mar its appearance. Keep it protected by parking in a garage. If this is not always available to you, use a car cover.

Don’t:

Wax.

Collision RepairWhile wax typically provides additional protection for the car’s exterior, the process of rubbing it into the surface of your car can damage the paint if done too soon. Additionally, the substance may discolor the vehicle. Wait at least three months before using carnauba wax to prevent wear and tear.

Ignore mechanical issues.

If you start to notice problems with the vehicle following repairs—such as poor alignment, shuddering, or slipping gears—take it back to the body shop. Many shops guarantee their work or provide warranties, but if you wait too long to inform them of problems, those can expire.

Drive on dirt roads.

The dust, dirt, and debris that is kicked up while driving on dirt roads or off-road terrain can chip the paint if it hasn’t set. For at least three months, avoid unpaved roads if possible.
