Many people choose to live in older homes for their charm and character. However, since the original plumbing might be running through the house, a plumber should update the system to meet modern demands. Doing so could help you avoid the following concerns.

3 Common Plumbing Issues in Old Houses

1. Rust-Colored Water

Although galvanized steel pipes are coated in zinc to prevent deterioration, the protective membrane wears away over time. When this happens, the steel will rust. Rust deposits can mix with water, causing the liquid to turn brown, red, or orange as it flows out of faucets. The liquid can stain fixtures and clothes—not to mention, drinking it could be a health concern—so have a plumber replace the corroded channels.

2. Slow Drainage

plumbingWater pooling in sink basins, shower enclosures, and bathtubs could be caused by soap scum and grease buildup in drain lines. A plumbing technician will use drain snakes and water-jetting tools to clear the lines.

Alternatively, house settling and shifting can cause pipes to slope down. Wastewater will then collect at the low spots, eventually leading to backups and drainage issues. Replacing the dipping sections with new pipe and fortifying the rest should fix this issue.

3. Sewage Backups

Old sewer lines running under the house might not be able to accommodate the amount of wastewater generated from garbage disposals, washing machines, and other modern appliances. The strain could cause clogs and sewage backups through fixtures.

The same can happen when intrusive roots grow inside the sewer lines. A plumbing contractor can determine the location and severity of breaks and blockages using video inspection cameras before deciding how to proceed.
