A loud furnace is annoying, disruptive, and also a sign that something is wrong with the unit. When you hear strange, loud noises coming from this appliance, it likely cannot produce a consistent supply of warm air. For these reasons, you should consult a furnace repair professional immediately before the issue worsens. Below are several common causes of strange furnace noises.

Why Is a Furnace Noisy?

1. Damaged Blower Belt

In forced air furnaces, there is a belt between the motor and the blower. If this belt breaks or loosens, the furnace cannot generate warm air. This can cause the belt to emit a squealing or high-pitched whining sound. If the belt hits the inside of the furnace casing, the it may begin banging. Blower belts wear down over time and require periodic adjustments, so you should make furnace repair a priority whenever you hear these noises to ensure your family remains comfortable.

2. Clogged Air Filter

After some time, this debris can clog the filter, preventing air from passing through easily. This causes the air to flow through tighter spaces, creating a loud whistling sound. To prevent this, you should generally change your filter every three months. However, you may need to do this every month if you have pets.

3. Broken Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger transmits heat from the inner combustion chamber to the blower so that the furnace can push it through the ducts. A leak or crack in the heat exchanger can produce a noticeable rattling sound. However, this issue also presents serious safety risks, such as carbon monoxide poisoning. If you hear the furnace rattling, turn off the unit and schedule a repair call right away.
