Pizza is loved around the world and primarily considered Italian cuisine. It has much more diverse roots; however, that may change the way you view your favorite pie. Below is an overview of pizza’s fascinating history and ideas on how to enjoy pies the way the originators did.

Where Did Pizza Come Originate?

Flatbreads

Flatbreads are considered the precursor to pizza and were enjoyed in many cultures. Ancient Greeks enjoyed plakous, a baked flatbread with onion, garlic, cheese, and herbs. Persian soldiers baked flatbreads in the 6th Century B.C. topped with cheese and dates, while Romans ate pitas topped with cheese and vegetables. Roman Jews also ate matzah with olive oil and cheese, while Chinese bing and Indian paratha share many qualities with pizza.

Naples Pizza

pizzaThe first authentic mention of modern pizza was in Naples, Italy, in the 18th century. Poverty was a problem in this booming city, and pizza was served in homes and shops as an affordable meal. Some were topped only with garlic and cheese, while others included fish and herbs.

Pizza was first considered a food of the poor, though it was welcomed in the late 1800s as residents of Naples migrated elsewhere. Immigrants to the U.S. popularized it during the turn of the century. Lombardi’s, considered the first pizzeria in the U.S., was opened in New York City in 1905. Allied soldiers in both World Wars returned home with popular recipes, and a growing fascination with Italian food led to more pizzas being served abroad and in the homeland.

Variations

Pizza innovations have led to countless varieties around the world. It’s enjoyed with a wide number of cheeses and vegetables. BBQ and alfredo pies are unique in the U.S., while Greek pies substitute mozzarella with feta. Canadian bacon and pineapple make the famous Hawaiian pizza, while Indian pizza includes yogurt, sheep, and chicken tikka.
