Learning to play the piano is still possible in your adult years. The best instructors know how to craft lessons based on their students’ unique needs — regardless of how old they are. If you’ve always wanted to take piano lessons but are worried it’s too late, here are some tips to motivate you.

How to Learn to Play Piano as an Adult

1. Embrace Your Mistakes

Celebrate the notion that you’re willing to take piano lessons as an adult. Understand that mistakes will be made and are expected, and don’t be so hard on yourself when they occur. Some older students are accustomed to knowing what they’re doing and being experts in other parts of their lives.

Learning a new hobby can be frustrating if you don’t get it right on the first few attempts. Use the moments as reminders that you’re making substantial efforts to learn. Mistakes are stepping stones toward improvement.

2. Commit to Practicing

Learning to play requires regular practice and reinforcement so that you can improve and progress. Minimize or eliminate distractions and interruptions from kids or spouses during your practice times. This might include turning off any devices or putting the piano in a separate music room.

3. Keep It Fun

Remind yourself why you started taking piano lessons in the first place. Whatever the reason, remember to have fun. Some adults may get so focused on the technical aspects of learning that they forget to enjoy the experience. Don’t forget to relax and enjoy yourself as you learn this new skill.
