The World Canine Organization recognizes 360 distinct breeds of dog, each with different coats and dog grooming requirements. However, dog coats can be grouped into a few different types to make it easier to understand how to best care for them. Learn more about what kind of coat your dog has with this helpful guide.

5 Different Dog Coat Types

1. Short

Short or smooth coat dogs like beagles, dachshunds, and pit bulls require the least amount of dog grooming. Brush your dog weekly with a bristle brush to remove any loose hair and minimize shedding.

2. Long

Long coat dogs like golden retrievers and Shih Tzus have long fur that needs more frequent care. Brush your dog daily with a pin brush to manage shedding. Use a brush that has a wide gap to prevent snagging and static charges. Then brush again with a bristle brush to smooth the coat.

3. Double

Some long-haired dogs, particularly shepherds, collies, and cold-weather breeds, have double coats that help keep them insulated and dry. The outer coat is long and thick, while the inner coat is made of short, fine fur that is similar to down.

4. Wire

Wire coat dogs like the Airedale, Irish wolfhound, and wire fox terrier have wiry fur that is prone to tangling. Use a pin brush a few times a week to remove and detangle fur. Some wire coat breeds may need to have their mustaches and eyebrows trimmed professionally.

5. Curly

Curly coat dogs like poodles, bichon frises, and Portuguese water dogs need regular trimming since their hair grows rapidly and can become snarled. Brush weekly with a curved slicker brush, which has fine, short wires that are set close together.
