Cockroaches are known for being persistent. While cockroach control professionals eliminate existing infestations, knowing what attracts these pests may help you avoid this unfortunate situation in the first place. Use the following guide to keep bugs out of your indoor space.

What Draws Cockroaches to Homes?

1. Food

Like any other creature, cockroaches need sustenance to survive, which makes a kitchen the perfect place to hide. Dirty dishes in the sink, food crumbs on the counter, and containers in the trash look like easy meals, so keep your food prep areas clean.

You should also rinse out cans before throwing them away, taking out the trash every day. Pests can enter open boxes and chew through cardboard, so store food in airtight glass or plastic containers.

2. Water

Roaches can live for up to a month without food, but they can only go a few days without water. They often enter homes in search of moisture, which is why they’re often found in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

3. Shelter

Insects need shelter, especially in the cold winter months. Unfortunately, they can squeeze through even small openings, including seams between walls and flooring.

At least once a year, inspect the exterior of your home, looking for any cracks, holes, and other fissures that serve as access points. Use caulk to seal gaps around windows and doors, have cracks repaired promptly, and install a grate over the dryer vent.
