Tornadoes are always terrifying events, especially for your beloved pets who can’t understand what’s going on. Many dogs and cats run away or get lost during these dangerous weather events, or they may get trapped by falling debris if they can’t make it to the storm shelter in time. Below are a few tips for helping your furry friends get through a tornado safely.

How to Protect Your Pets From a Tornado

1. Make Sure They Have Identification

After a tornado, dogs and cats may wind up miles away from home. Getting custom tags engraved with their name and your contact information can help ensure they find their way back after the storm.

However, some pets slip their collars if they get snagged on a branch or storm debris, so consider having your animals microchipped as well. If they’re found later, a vet or animal shelter can scan the chip to recover the pet’s identification number, which can then be used to search for your contact information.

2. Designate a Safe Space

Choose a small innermost room with few windows and no large panes of glass, like a bathroom or laundry room. Make sure everyone in your family knows to gather there in a tornado, and designate someone to bring the pets.

3. Include Pet Supplies in Your Shelter Area

Whether you have a storm shelter or a safe room in the house, make sure it’s stocked with at least a week’s worth of food and water, as well as any medications they need. You should also keep a spare leash, plastic poop bags for your dog, and a supply of their favorite treats. For cats, keep a few boxes of cat litter, cans of food, and treats to keep your furry friend comfortable.

Because tornadoes strike with little warning, you probably won’t have time to gather these items before a storm. Preparing them in advance can be essential for safely getting your pet through this experience.
