A sedentary lifestyle can lead to many health problems.  But what can you do if your job requires you to sit all day?

Improve Your Work Station

Sit on a stability ball which makes your core muscle work more.

Get a adjustable desk, either a table or a computer stand that changes height, to allow you to stand for more of your work day.  Or improvise at home with using a counter top or high table.

Look for ways to improve your work station.  Here are some tips.

Take Frequent Movement Breaks

Set a reminder to take a quick break every 30 minutes to do some simple movements

  • stand up and march for 30 seconds
  • walk a lap of your office or home
  • do 10 reps each of squats, shoulder rolls, heel raises, neck stretches.

Add More Activity to Your Day

  • Try walking or cycling instead of driving to your destination any time you can.
  • Get off the bus at an earlier stop and walk the rest of the way.
  • Park further away from the store to increase your step count in subtle ways.
  • Take the stairs if going up 1-2 flights or down 2-3 flights.
  • Have meetings on the go – schedule “walking” meetings with co-workers to inspire a healthier lifestyle.
  • Schedule into your day a time for walking such as before work or at lunch time, preferably outside at times when the weather permits.  Being outdoors can boost serotonin levels which can reduce anxiety and lower your risk of depression.

Other Simple Ways to Keep Moving

  • Walk around when you are on the phone.
  • Walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike while watching your favorite TV show or video.

Make Working Out Fun

What activities do you like to do?  A work out can occur while you are having fun.

  • Enjoy a walk in the park or on the greenway while enjoying nature.
  • Put on your favorite music and dance away, maybe while doing house chores (which won’t feel as much like a chore when you are dancing).
  • Find and exercise buddy, even if you are on the phone with your buddy while you walk in separate parks.
