Today’s kitchen is often a multipurpose room that is used for cooking, entertaining, and relaxing. As such, it requires various types of kitchen lighting to cater to these many roles. If you’re remodeling, remember these lighting options to make your space more efficient.

What Are Some Popular Types of Kitchen Lighting?

1. Pendant Lights

Also known as drop or suspended lighting, these are single or multiple fixtures that hang from the ceiling by a cord, chain, or rod. They’re typically used to provide general lighting over a specific focal point in the room, like a table or island. However, the light is often unobstructed and reflects across the ceiling and back down across the room.

While the design can vary, pendant lighting often consists of a single light bulb that’s connected to a mount, located inside a globe, or hanging beneath a shade. The height can also be easily adjusted to extend just above the space, or to create a tiered effect when used in multiples.

2. Track Lighting

Individual heads, which house one or more bulbs, can typically be placed anywhere along the track, and they can be angled to point towards different areas of the kitchen. This unique feature makes these fixtures perfect for lighting darker areas in the room or spots where you need a lot of visibility for working.

3. Recessed Lights

When you have plenty of ceiling space available, recessed lighting can be installed around the room to create a sleek look. The fixtures, which consist of a housing, trim, and bulb, are installed directly in the ceiling so that the metal trim is flush with the surrounding space. They’re ideal in kitchens that have low or tiered-level ceilings.

While the design prevents them from spreading light around the room, multiple bulbs are often used. For this reason, many homeowners prefer to install dimmable lights so that they have more control over the ambiance in the space.
