Public agencies as well as private businesses and storefronts that serve the general public must comply with certain regulations set forth by the American Disabilities Act. One key element to ensure your company aligns with regulations is the width and functionality of commercial doors. Here’s a helpful look at what’s necessary in order to adhere to ADA guidelines.

Understanding ADA Accessibility for Commercial Doors

What Makes an Automatic Door ADA Accessible?

Automatic doors have sensors that are triggered by pedestrians. When an individual gets close enough, the doors will automatically open without the need to pull or push a handle. In order for an automatic door to be considered ADA-compliant, however, it must remain open for at least five seconds and require less than five pounds of force to open. Additionally, the clearance width must be at least 32 inches across, and the threshold for the commercial door can’t be higher than half an inch to accommodate individuals in wheelchairs.

Which Doors Must Comply With ADA Requirements?

Commercial doorsIn newly constructed buildings, at least 60% of all public entrances to the building must have ADA-compliant doors. These must either open automatically and adhere to the measures noted above, have a special ADA automatic door opener button for those individuals who require it, or door handle hardware and closing mechanisms that align with government requirements.

Entrances that lead from parking structures or parking lots must also be accessible. In addition, doors included on a building’s safety escape route plan must be accessible.
