Air conditioners have a way of spreading odors throughout the house, especially if the equipment itself is dirty. Instead of cool, refreshing air, you might catch a whiff of a stale, musty odor every time the AC cycles up. Here’s a closer look at why your unit might circulate a moldy, mildewy smell.

Why Does an AC Start Smelling Musty?

1. Clogged Condensate Line

As it cools the air, your system also pulls moisture from it. The water vapor collects in a drip pan under the unit before draining out of your house through a condensate line.

When the drainage line is clogged, though, standing water can create the perfect conditions for mold growth. Pouring vinegar into the condensate line once a month can prevent clogs, but if it’s already blocked, you may need an experienced air conditioner tech to get the water moving again.

2. A Dirty Air Filter

air conditionerThe filter should keep dust and contaminants out of your airflow, but it can get clogged with dirt, hair, and debris. In serious cases, mildew can start to grow in the filter itself before getting sucked into the ducts. Changing your filter at the start of each season and checking it once a month cuts down on unpleasant odors and improves your indoor air supply.

3. Dirty Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil removes water vapor from the air, but it also collects dust and dirt particles that get through the air filter. Caked-on dirt can make the evaporator less effective, resulting in water building up on the outside. A fresh filter will usually keep this vital component from getting too dirty, but cleaning the coil itself should probably be left to an expert.

4. Damp or Dirty Ducts

The ducts deliver air from the AC to each room in the house. Over time, debris and moisture can get trapped in the ductwork and registers, which can also give mold a place to thrive. Remove and clean your vent registers, then wipe out the inside of each duct opening around the home. This may help keep the air cleaner, fresher, and healthier.
