Antiques add character and interest to your home, but they aren’t always easy to move. Some antiques are incredibly fragile and prone to damage, which is why packing them carefully and working with relocation professionals are important. Here are three tips for moving with antiques.

The Ways to Move Antiques Safely

1. Color-Code Smaller Objects

Sometimes when packing antiques, it is easy to lose smaller components inside the box, especially if they are wrapped separately. For instance, the lid to a teapot could be lost inside a box if the lid is removed and wrapped separately to protect it from chips.

Anytime you pack smaller objects alongside larger items, wrap them in colored tissue or packing paper so you can spot them easily when you unpack.

2. Cushion Interior Surfaces Carefully

relocationAnytime you move anything that could be damaged by being dropped, bumped, or scraped during relocation, it is important to provide an ample amount of cushioning inside a strong container.

Wrap antiques in a few layers of cushioning wrap or packing paper, and cushion the interior of a rigid cardboard box or plastic tote with packing peanuts or crumpled paper. By creating a layer of cushion, you can protect your delicate items, even if they are jostled suddenly.

3. Label Everything

While labeling boxes as “fragile” is important, it can help to label what is actually inside the box since some items may need extra special care. Make sure all boxes containing antiques have a brightly colored fragile label on all sides of the box, and that you indicate what kind of antique is inside the container.

For example, simply including “Fine China” on the side of the box could let your relocation company know that the container is heavy, may require more than one person to lift, and should be handled very carefully.
