The creation was the brainchild of Greek immigrant Sam Panopoulos in Ontario, Canada, in 1962. After returning home from Detroit, where pizza was an Italian novelty at the time, he bought a small oven and started to experiment with flavors.

After trying flavor combinations like pepperoni and mushrooms or bacon and olives, he decided to try pineapple on his next creation. While the resulting sweetness was new and fresh, he decided to add salty ham to balance the flavor, and the idea of the Hawaiian pizza was born.
