If you like foods with sweet and savory combinations, you might enjoy pineapple or Hawaiian pizza. This classic is made with a traditional dough, red sauce, ham, and pieces of pineapple, and is sure to please every member of your family. Read on to learn how pizza with pineapple originated and why it works so well.

The History of Putting Pineapple on Pizza

Origins of Hawaiian Pizza

While many people refer to this option as Hawaiian pizza, it didn’t actually originate in the tropical islands. The creation was the brainchild of Greek immigrant Sam Panopoulos in Ontario, Canada, in 1962. After returning home from Detroit, where pizza was an Italian novelty at the time, he bought a small oven and started to experiment with flavors.

After trying flavor combinations like pepperoni and mushrooms or bacon and olives, he decided to try pineapple on his next creation. While the resulting sweetness was new and fresh, he decided to add salty ham to balance the flavor, and the idea of the Hawaiian pizza was born.

Why This Topping Took Off

pizzaWhile there was, and still is, some resistance to the idea of putting something so sweet on a savory pizza, the idea took off. As pizza parlors became more popular across the nation, folks sampled Hawaiian pies, looking for something new and different. You can now find this pie topping on most menus across the country. A study conducted in the western United States showed that 17% of survey respondents state that pineapple is one of their favorite toppings

If you haven’t tried this topping, consider ordering a traditional version with ham, bacon, and pineapple. Some eateries offer grilled chicken on their Hawaiian pies, as well.
