Going to church every Sunday is important, but spiritual growth continues outside of the sanctuary throughout the week. Practicing your faith during these times of quarantining and social distancing can be difficult, especially if churches are not holding in-person services. As you participate in independent Bible studies at home, apply these ideas to help you get the most out of this practice.

5 Tips for at-Home Bible Study

1. Have a Goal

Aimlessly reading the word of God is better than not reading it at all, but you’ll learn more if you have a specific purpose in mind. Consider prioritizing a certain faith-related topic, such as hope or charity, and look for examples of them in what you study. If you are looking to better understand God or strengthen your relationship with Him, think about what each passage you study teaches you about His nature.

2. Include Prayer

Pray before or after your studies to glean as much inspiration as possible. You can also keep a prayer in your mind while reading, even if you’re just seeking help with understanding something in your life. Choose a passage upon which to meditate every week.

3. Take Notes

As you read, keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings so that you can return to them later. Writing things down will reinforce them in your mind, helping you transform these thoughts into actions and habits. You can also write down biblical questions to answer later so that you don’t forget them.

4. Involve a Group

Bible studyConsider studying as a family or with a group of friends from church. Having multiple perspectives could help everyone gain new insights into the gospel and become closer to God. Being accountable to other people is also a good way to make sure that you study as often as you should.

5. Make It Fun

Everyone is more motivated to do things that are enjoyable, so think about how you can make Bible study more appealing to yourself. Look for games and songs that can help you test your knowledge or memorize passages. If you’re studying a specific topic, like faith, have your family keep a tally of how often you read the word and treat your children to a piece of candy when they’ve hit a certain number of references.
