Lagers and Pilsners are two of the most common types of beer. While the two have many similarities, there are also key differences when it comes to flavor, varieties, and brewing methods. Whether you’re trying to decide between draft beer options or just want to learn more about your favorite beverages, here’s a guide to lagers and Pilsners.

Lager

Lager describes a large category of beer, so there are many varieties that fall under this umbrella. A beer qualifies as a lager if it is brewed at cold temperatures using bottom-fermenting yeast. This strain of yeast produces carbon dioxide more slowly than top-fermenting yeast, which is used in ale beers. This creates a light flavor, unlike ales, which tend to be hoppier.

For example, schwarzbier is a dark beer with a flavor reminiscent of chocolate or coffee. Amber lagers have toasty or caramel flavors and use a medium amount of malts and hops. India pale lagers, or IPLs, tend to be hoppy, low-malt beers that have a light to medium color and tangy flavor.

Pilsner

Pilsner refers to a specific category of lager. This means Pilsners use the same bottom-fermenting yeast when they are brewed. These beers tend to include small amounts of malt and hops, so the flavors are not overwhelming. This style of beer is named for the Czech city where it was originally brewed, Plzen.

Pilsners are pale gold in color and have a crisp taste. These beers are especially refreshing since they aren’t brewed for as long as other lagers and are not especially flavorful. There are different varieties available, ranging from very mild to moderately hoppy and from straw-colored to deep gold. Many popular beers like Budweiser®, Heineken®, and Stella Artois® are Pilsners.
