Whether you live in San Marcos, TX, or you’re just passing through, make sure to stop by Grins Restaurant for a mouthwatering meal. This locally owned establishment first opened its doors on Valentine’s Day in 1975 and has been serving the community ever since. Today, this family-friendly restaurant is owned and operated by two Texas State graduates—Paul Sutphen and Johnny Ferrell. Here’s more about the history of this establishment.

Humble Beginnings

In 1975, the Lightfoot house was converted into a restaurant that had a menu comprised of nachos, burgers, and draft beer. As the local hotspot, they also hosted live music. Performers included the likes of Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, and the Beacon City Band.

While their initial capacity was 60 patrons, Grins has since been expanded three times: in 1983, 1987, and 1996. Today, the space—including their expansive deck—can accommodate up to 250 customers at any given time. Their menu has also been expanded and now boasts world-famous burgers, Texas-sized onion rings, and an award-winning salsa.

Paul & Johnny’s Vision

restaurantPaul was the first cook to work at Grins, and he bought out one of the founding owners shortly after graduating. Johnny was also a cook at Grins and bought into the business in 1978.

From day one, Paul and Johnny set out to provide the community with exceptional customer service and award-winning food in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Grins has been voted the Best Happy Hour five years in a row.

A proud pillar of the community, Grins Restaurant has stood the test of time, and they have an impressive showpiece hanging in their entrance to remind everyone of their long history. The windmill you see upon walking in once stood on a ranch that belonged to the founder’s brother. Two local gentlemen fixed it up and added the mechanics so it could hang proudly in the entranceway to welcome San Marcos residents and Texas State Students.
