As the weather begins to cool, some plants go into dormancy, while others begin to thrive. As summer comes to a close, prepare your garden for seasonal changes so that you can keep fall foliage healthy and encourage new growth. Below, you’ll learn more about how to prepare your landscaping for the autumn months and what plants to get form your local garden shed

4 Ways to Prepare Your Garden for Fall

1. Add Mulching

Honey-colored straw and dark brown compost mulching add color to landscaping that can improve curb appeal for the fall season. Shredded bark and wood chips are especially beneficial for retaining water and distributing it more evenly to root systems when conditions become dry. Mulching also insulates the soil to prevent frost from damaging the roots.

2. Plant New Foliage

Many vegetables also grow well during autumn. Kale, for instance, dries out and tastes bitter when grown in warm weather, so consider planting it in the fall in mostly sunny areas and soil areas that have good drainage.

3. Remove Weeds & Overgrowth

As the summer ends, you might notice dried-up annuals in your landscaping—remove these to make room for new growth. Pull weeds and apply herbicide to problem plants, such as morning glory, to keep them from crowding your fall vegetables and perennials.

4. Tend to Potted Plants

Bring potted plants indoors before frost damages their blossoms, leaves, and root systems. Tropical plants, such as palms, citrus, and plumeria, do well during the winter if they’re placed in warm, indoor areas near sunny windows. If any herbs have not died as a result of summer heat, bring them indoors, or harvest and dry them to use in cooking.
