If you’re traveling near Las Vegas, consider making a pit stop for a Hoover Dam tour. Located just 30 minutes south of the city, this marvel of engineering has been a prominent fixture since 1936 and is still one of the largest hydroelectric power sources in the country. If you choose to add it to your list of stops, here are a few ways to make your visit more rewarding.

What Sights Should You See on a Tour of the Hoover Dam?

1. Walk Across the Bypass Bridge

This bridge provides a wonderful opportunity for capturing photos of the dam and surrounding canyon. The walkway is situated 840 feet above the Colorado River and spans over half-a-mile.

The bridge is worth seeing in its own right—its beautiful concrete arch is the largest of its kind in North America. It’s also known as the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. It sports its own parking area and offers spectacular views of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and Black Canyon. Follow signs for the Hoover Dam access road until you spot the clearly marked turnoff.

2. Look Out for Wildlife

Turn your face to the sky to look for magnificent birds, such as golden eagles. Fans of old-school cartoons can try to spot a greater roadrunner. Although these birds seldom fly, they can frequently be seen running across the desert.

3. Visit the Power Plant

The Hoover Dam power plant houses 17 giant turbines that provide hydroelectric power to Arizona, California, and Nevada. The plant is only accessible through paid tours, but paying the $15 fee allows a glimpse at the inner workings of the dam. It also includes a ride in the dam elevators.

While this is not recommended for visitors with claustrophobia, it’s an enjoyable and educational add-on for most tourists. Book a spot in advance to guarantee access.
