If you’re a proud boat owner, you know that storing it is a serious responsibility. But when the weather warms up, and it comes time to take to the water again, you need to exert just as much effort into removing it from boat storage safely. Here’s how to do it the right way.

How to Take Your Vessel Out of Boat Storage

1. Assess It Thoroughly

Walk around the boat and give it a thorough once-over. Check both the exterior and interior for anything that may need attention, like burned-out lights or squeaky moving components that require some oil. You can resolve these issues right away to avoid problems on the water later.

2. Prepare the Engine

Replace the filter and gear lube, too, to protect the engine in the coming months. You should also change the power steering fluid and coolant at this stage.

3. Inspect the Battery

Depending on how long the boat was in storage, the battery might need some attention. If you detached it beforehand, test it by filling it with water and use a tester to make sure it works. Use a microfiber cloth to clear away any corrosion buildup on the terminals, then place it in the boat. If the battery tests poorly, it’s best to replace it.

4. Check Other Parts

Before you put it away for the off-season, it’s important to check the cables, belts, and hoses for signs of brittleness that could eventually lead to premature wear. Check to see if they feel excessively firm, or have cracks or other structural damage, and if the belts are snug.

Replace anything that’s not in good shape, and then look at the propellers. Make sure there are no dents or bends. The hull should also be free of cracks, and its screws should be secured tightly.

5. Confirm Safety Gear

Make sure the boat contains everything needed to keep you safe, including life jackets, a fire extinguisher, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in enclosed spaces, such as the lower deck or cabin. Make sure that the electronic equipment, including the radio and GPS, works properly.
