A home theater is no longer only an option for wealthier households. Affordable technology has made it possible to bring the cinematic experience into any home. If you’re considering installing a home theater, here is a helpful guide to get you started on the project.

How to Build a Home Theater

1. Choose a Location

Pick a space in your home that is distanced from bedrooms and other main gathering areas so no one is disturbed during movie time or game night. A room that is at least 20 feet long and 13 feet wide will work best.

A professional contractor can offer small renovation ideas or help you determine the best setup for your theater based on the current room design.

2. Take Measurements

Before purchasing anything, take measurements of your future home theater. Measure the length of the walls, the distance from the floor to the ceiling, and measurements of specific areas, like where you would like to set up chairs and tables. This ensures you don't buy furniture that is too overwhelming or underwhelming for the space.

3. Consider Colors & Lighting

It can be tempting to paint your home theater a lively red or blue to brighten up the room, but vibrant colors can reflect light and negatively affect the movie-viewing experience. Choose dark shades or neutral colors like shades of gray and taupe.

While it’s fine to install bright lighting in your theater, make sure everything can be fully turned off when it’s time to watch the movie. Consider installing dimmers for your lighting fixtures.

Avoid placing items made of glass, like wall art or mirrors, on the walls if they cannot be covered up. Glass reflects sound and light, which will be distracting during a movie. If there are windows in your home theater, black them out completely or opt for blackout curtains so you can still let light in if you want to.
