When working properly, an HVAC system should hum quietly in the background and rarely be noticed. However, when it is starting to break down, it will often emit some audible noises. To ensure you schedule prompt HVAC repair, never ignore these four sounds from your system.

HVAC Noises You Shouldn't Ignore

1. Squealing

A squealing or high-pitched whine typically has one of two causes. The blower belt may be worn or damaged; if it breaks, the blower won't be able to produce any air. Alternatively, the motor may need to be lubricated. Without oil, the parts rub up against one another.

2. Rattling

Rattling can sound like a series of thumps, thwaps, and bangs. Regardless, it usually indicates a loose part in the motor or blower. A common issue is something coming loose and getting caught in the blades of the blower fan. If left unaddressed, the cause of the rattling can further damage the system and require more complex HVAC repairs. Therefore, don't tune out this warning sign.

3. Clicking

HVAC repairWith clicking, much depends on the time of year that you hear the noise. If it's summer and the air conditioner is in use, clicking can mean problems with the compressor, air handler, relay system, or electrical controls. If it's winter and the first time you've used the furnace this season, clicking is usually normal. However, if the noise continues, it can be a sign of a potentially dangerous pilot light malfunction.

4. Hissing

When you hear hissing from an air conditioner, it often denotes a leak in the refrigerant line or a problem with the pressure inside the unit. With a hissing furnace, the problem could also be a leak in the unit or somewhere in an air duct. Since gas leaks can be toxic, always have hissing sounds diagnosed by an HVAC technician to keep your home and family safe and comfortable.
