High-speed winds from seasonal storms can topple even the sturdiest fencing materials. If the barrier is blown over, restoring property safety and security as quickly as possible should be the priority. Here are a few tips to help you handle the situation swiftly.

What to Do After Your Fence Topples Over

1. Take Safety Precautions

Without a fence for confinement, children and pets can venture out of the yard. Make sure youngsters and animals stay inside until the barrier is back.

If some fencing materials are still standing, check the stability of the posts. If the installation is wobbly, place caution tape around it or flags in the ground to alert people to stay away from those sections.

If the fence toppled power lines, contact the utility company immediately to remove the dangerous wires.

2. Alert Your Neighbors

You can both refer to title deeds and property boundary lines to determine which of you legally owns the fence. From there, you can decide how to approach the situation. For example, one person can pay to have the damaged fencing materials removed, while the other covers replacement costs. You can also split the costs.

3. Contact Your Insurance Company

If you’re the fence owner, reach out to your homeowners insurance provider to see whether fence repairs and replacement are covered in your policy. You and your neighbor then won’t have to pay out of pocket.

You’ll need to determine the reason the fence fell. For example, a policy might pay to replace a storm-damaged installation but not one the homeowner let fall into disrepair.

To ensure your new fence can withstand Hawaii’s tropical storms, leave the installation to David's Fencing in Waipahu.
