Maintaining your toilet will ensure your lavatory is safe and dependable for years to come. The good news is that you don't have to be a plumber to perform routine toilet maintenance and implement plumbing-friendly habits. Here, learn a few do’s and don'ts to keep your toilet in good condition and minimize the chances of a plumbing emergency.

Do:

Keep a plunger nearby.

Many small clogs can be removed with a plunger, so station one close to the toilet or under the bathroom sink. Position the cup of the plunger over the drain to form a tight seal; push and pull the handle up and down for about 20 seconds. Check to see if the water is draining as it should; if not, continue plunging as needed. Plumbers recommend avoiding chemical drain cleaners for loosening clogs, as they are toxic and can damage pipes and fixtures.

Use a plastic toilet brush.

plumberThere are many high-end toilet brushes on the market today, made of materials like brass, stainless steel, even gold plating. But a good, old-fashioned plastic toilet brush is best. It won't scratch or scrape the toilet bowl, and it can be easily—and cheaply—replaced if broken.

Don't:

Flush anything but waste and toilet paper.

One of the best actions you can take for your home's plumbing is refraining from flushing non-flushable items down the toilet. This will prevent clogs and backups and maintain the life of your toilet. Human waste and toilet paper are the only things that should be flushed—no tissues, paper towels, cotton balls, or hygiene products. And be mindful of the amount of toilet paper you use; too much can also lead to clogs.

Use abrasive cleaners.

Some toilet cleaners contain harsh substances like sodium hypochlorite or hydrochloric acid. These can potentially damage the toilet surface, and they pose serious health risks if accidentally ingested or splashed into the eyes or onto the skin. Instead, clean with vinegar and baking soda. Spray the bowl with white vinegar, let it sit for a few minutes, sprinkle with baking soda, and scrub with a toilet brush. Wipe down the rim, lid, tank, and base with a vinegar and water solution at a 1:1 ratio.
