Whether you are going to the other side of the state or across the country, moving involves a lot of planning. In addition to boxing up your items and arranging for a truck rental, you need to set up utilities, such as heat and electric services, in your new place. Below are a few tips for making sure your utilities are ready.

How to Set Up Utilities During a Move

1. Determine What You Need

You will most likely need gas, water, sewer, and electric services, as well as cable and internet, in your new home. If you are renting, your water and sewer may be part of the rental agreement with your landlord or they may require you to contact the municipality to connect an account. Find out from the property owner or check your lease. For trash, some townships have public waste management; others require residents to contact private companies. Figure out what your area offers at least a month in advance.

2. Transfer or Cancel

However, many of these companies only operate regionally. If you need to cancel, give the old provider the final date that you want service to ensure you aren’t paying money for two locations without cause. However, if you have yet to sell your old home, you'll need to keep your utilities on to ensure interested buyers can tour your house with light and heat available.

3. Establish New Service

Some providers have information and setup options on their website, but others may require a call to start new services. You will need your new address and the day of your move. They may also ask for payment information upfront and may offer an auto-pay and online billing option to make account management convenient.

In some cases, they may need someone on-site to grant them entry before they can setup services. To avoid arriving at a dark home, see if a friend in the area can let them in for you.

4. Check Utilities

Check that everything is turned on when you arrive. Try the lights to test the electric service and the stove for gas. Flush the toilet and contact the trash pickup company to ensure you are on their list for removal. If anything is incorrect, contact the providers immediately.
