While it’s still warm outside for the first few weeks of autumn, many homeowners will keep their HVAC systems set to cooling mode to combat the heat. Unfortunately, fallen leaves can get inside the outdoor condenser unit and affect the system’s performance. To keep your family cool and avoid the need for AC repair, below is a guide to what fallen leaves do to equipment.

How Fallen Leaves Compromise AC Performance

The condenser unit contains the condenser coil, compressor, and fan. When the part of the AC system that’s inside the house absorbs heat, the warm air filters through your vents to the outdoor condenser unit to be released into the environment. The fan pulls cold air in from the sides and bottom of the cabinet. The cool air that is drawn in forces the warm air inside the cabinet to filter out through the top.

Leaves that get inside the condenser unit collect at the bottom. This compromises the ability of the fan to draw in cool air from the base of the cabinet. The mechanical components will work harder to release the heat as a result. The extra effort drains energy, which leads to higher cooling costs.

The condenser coil and compressor could become damaged from the strain, too. You’ll also notice the temperature inside isn’t as cool as the thermostat setting indicates.

How to Prevent Problems

HVACTo prevent airflow blockages that affect HVAC performance, raking leaves should be at the top of your chore list. Put the piles of leaves in bags, so they don’t blow back onto the condenser unit. Shrubs and trees that hang over the unit should be cut back to create a wide clearing.

Beyond yardwork, you should also schedule a professional inspection. Air conditioning contractors will use compressed air to dislodge leaves in the crevices. While cleaning the equipment, technicians will also examine refrigerant and compressor tubing for damage, inspect the outdoor fan motor, and perform additional tasks to improve your system’s efficiency.
