Whether they're chukkas, brogues, or steel-toed safety boots, if you've recently invested in new leather shoes, one of the first things you need to do is condition them. Just like you need a few days of breaking them in for comfort, conditioning new shoes is essential for longevity. If you've never done this before, here's what you need to know.

Basics of Leather Shoe Care

Purpose

Unlike other shoe textiles, such as canvas or nylon, leather can dry out. Although brand new leather shoes will feel a bit pliant to the touch, they're rarely fully conditioned. If nothing is applied, then eventually, the leather will become stiff, brittle, and weak. However, using a leather conditioner from the outset gives the material the nourishment it needs to keep it supple and flexible. They'll be much more comfortable for walking and working since they'll have more give with every step. When applied regularly, the conditioner keeps it looking and feeling good for years to come. Additionally, because the conditioner soaks into the fabric, it fills in the pores of the surface and creates a layer of protection from dirt and stains.

Maintenance

shoesAfter initially conditioning your shoes, you'll need to do it again. How often you do this will depend on the type of shoe, frequency of use, and environmental circumstances. For example, if you have steel-toed footwear for work and wear them in the rain or snow, it's best to apply conditioner once a week. However, if they're dress shoes and you only wear them every once in a while for date night, then you may only need to condition them twice a year or once every season.

Process

Before you condition your shoes, you need to clean them. If they're brand new, you can skip this step, but if it's maintenance time, a clean rag should suffice. However, if there are stains, you may need a leather cleaner or saddle soap. After cleaning, let them dry; although it could take longer, 30 minutes at room temperature usually works. Once dry, apply the conditioner in circular motions with a soft, lint-free cloth. Use only enough to coat the surface; too much will suffocate fabric. Leave it overnight to soak into the material thoroughly. Then, in the morning, buff away the excess and let it air dry again. You can then move onto polishing if you choose.
