Having trees in your yard provides many benefits, including visual appeal and shade. However, if your tree becomes weak—for example, if it develops a disease—it can also put your property at risk. Practicing preventative tree care involves knowing what common illnesses look like so you can address any problems.

What Diseases Plague Texas Trees?

1. Hypoxylon Canker

This disease commonly affects oaks, elms, sycamores, and pecan trees during droughts. As such, they are more likely to develop it during the summer. You will first notice the loss of leaves and branches around the crown. Shortly after, the tree will die.

There is no treatment, but you can prevent it with diligent tree care. Give your trees plenty of water during dry seasons. Seal any open wounds in the truck immediately since this is where the infection can enter the tree. If you do notice that Hypoxylon Canker has set in, have the tree removed before it can fall onto your car or roof.

2. Oak Wilt

tree careThis affects several kinds of trees, but oaks are the most susceptible. The disease can be spread by certain types of beetles or when the same saw blade is used on multiple trees. Warning signs include leaves turning brown and falling off. Early treatment, in the form of an injection, can save the tree. Hire professionals for any pruning your property needs. They know how to avoid cross-contamination. You can also paint over open wounds to prevent infection.

3. Bacterial Leaf Scorch (BLS)

BLS is not common. However, it can affect elms, oaks, sycamores, and box elders. Insects such as leafhoppers carry the bacteria between plants. First, a yellow band and scorched tips will appear on leaves, after which they will fall off prematurely. Then, branches will die. Prevent this by properly watering and mulching your trees; a healthy tree can better fight off infection.
